does using dual monitors use more resources

Depends on the resolution. If you switch it to the external display running the same resolution it shouldn't make much difference.

It will use more video RAM, yes. CPU? No.

And it should produce more heat. As soon as I plug a secondary monitor into my compaq laptop it starts melting so you might want to consider getting a cooling stand/pad if you don't already have one.

Yeah, sad truth, but if it was HP (which I also own) it would not just get hot, it would melt its interior

my everex's solution to high temps was to throttle the cpu with a addon application... but hopefully i will get my laptop back this year after its modified with some additional fans.
