Hi,

Buying a desktop computer for my other half, he is an engineering teacher so uses AutoCAD and Solidworks 2010. He has no money and so I want to buy him a decent desktop for his birthday in October and want throw that knackered old thing he uses at the mo out the window.

I am looking at HP cause I have always them in the past and they have never let me down. They also look really nice! (sorry only being honest :P)

After searching the net for days, I have whittled it down to these two which are just about in my price range:

For someone who knows absolutely NOTHING at all about computers is the p6554uk worth getting over the s5534uk? - taking into account the s5534uk comes with a 20" monitor (something I need to get as well)? I am judging the computers on their processors and their associated speeds - is AMD Phenom gonna be much faster than the i3? Would these computers be up the job of supporting these graphic design packages? I know that there are some astonishing super fast computers out there which would do this job with ease, but I just can't afford it so I am looking at the best options I have.

If anyone can offer me any advice, I would very very much appreciate it. I am completely out of my depth here and need someone who knows about computers to help me out and offer some advice please.

Thanks to anyone who can help, Jo.

Since he is using solidworks, you may want the one with video card. If you want to stick with HP, HP Pavilion p6554uk will be the better choice.
HP Pavilion s5535uk-m is on a small case. If your parter want to upgrade it with a video card to make machine run smoothly, it will be hard to do so.

However, you can consider this as well.

Video card - GTS 450 1GB (this is not a workstation card, but it is a lot better than onboard)
