Domain name and web hosting

Hi,
I'm looking into setting up a website for the support group i am running and want to host it with dreamhost.
My problem is i want to have the domain name as kdfoundation.org.au
I found out i would need to buy an australian domain name to get the .au
My question is - how would i get the domain name to go to the site if it was hosted on dreamhost. They have two options on dreamhost when signing up

1) I already own a domain, I just want to host it with you (you can still register a free domain later)!
2) I already own a domain, I want to host it AND transfer the registration for free!

If i'm paying for the domain supplier every 2 years to keep it would i be able to host it and transfer it to dreamhost (the second option)?

If i do the first option and just host it how would i link the domain to the site?

When you log in to the registrar that you registered the domain with you should be able to set the address that the domain points to.

I'm not entirely sure how the domain transfer works, I've never done one. If you are going to transfer the domain over make sure you still get it for 2 years.
 
You need to put the DNS of the host of your website in the registrar of your domain name.

ok so basically (correct me if i have mis understood) When i host with dreamhost i would get a temporary domain name and then once i registered the domain i want i would go into it and type in the temporary one for it to go to. So then that would basically take its place?
 
Not really:

You have a shared/dedicated server where you upload your files ( dreamhost if I understood). That server has a DNS adress (maybe dns1.dreamhost.com).

What I had to do with my website, is change the DNS settings of my domain name to put the one the server has, so that when somebody goes to www.my-domain.com, it goes to my server.

Ask Dreamhost about your DNS.
If you can't get an answer here, I recommend www.webmaster-talk.com, they are specialized in webmasters.
