OK I have dumped the free site I had at 81x that apparently has gone bankrupt or something, the entire 81x site has not loaded for days now.

I built a new site and found a webhosting site that I am going to pay for and I want to get two seperate names for my two websites. I can purchase both my chosen domain names from my webhosting site.

What I want to know is can my Domain name be sold out from under me? Has that happened before? Will I always have first shot at renewing my Domain name? Do you pay by the year only ? Can you pay for longer to keep your Domain name? Would my Domain name ever be "up for grabs" by someone else ?
 
Yes, it is possible for your domain to be sold from out under you, that is why it is important to buy your domain from a reputable large company with an established history.
Yes you will always have first shot at renewing your domain, if it is prior to expiry.
You pay by the year, you can pay up to ten years in advance.
Yes, it will be up for grabs if you dont pay your renewal fee and let the domain expire.
 
Thank you, I am not sure I understand exactly how it works, Do I purchase the Domain names first, then pay for the Webhosting, or pay for the webhosting package then get the Domain names ? Will one way be easier ? Or do I get them at the same time ? The webhosting company offers both but it seems to be you can get one or the other ?
 
Usually you can get both... what company is it? I'll have a look and tell you if you can get both at the same time...
 
I went with Bravenet. I am very limited in which webhosting company I could use. I can only upload photos, type in text and drag a mouse. I was able to use their free website to make sure I was able to build a site with them so I know I can use this company.

What about the information you have to give to register a Domain? I know that is public knowledge, will that information I give for the domain name have to match the credit card info?

Privacy is not really a problem the credit card bill goes to a drop mail box adress in a strip mall, and the contact phone number is a answering service.

But I am curious if they cross refrence it to match or verify it with the name your ip is under or something? I have the same IP for 7 years and that was started under my maiden name, credit card is in my married name, so two different last names.
