don't know what happened to my d/L speeds

I turned on computer this morning and was about to re-download Mini Tools Partition Wizard. It's about a 30MB file and it said more than 1 hour until finished downloading  Normally a 30MB file would take less than 15 seconds.

Our download speed with AT&T U-verse is 24Mbps. I don't know if AT&T U-verse throttles people's internet connections, but everything was fine yesterday.

Also, I went to speedtest.net and it's still really good. Says about 22Mbps download and 1.9Mbps upload speeds. If speedtest.net is showing those speeds, is it impossible that my ISP throttled my connection? What else could it be?

Could just be congestion or an issue at the remote server end. Remember to get a file/data that the remote endpoint has to have enough available resources as well as the specific route to/from source to destination and all hops in between.

Since it was isolated to one transfer I wouldn't worry about it.

Not all servers give you maximum speed. As beers said, it's likely the server you were downloading the file from couldn't allocate any more speed to your download due to congestion or other related issues.

I got the AT&T U-Verse 12mbps connection, but my upload speed is only 0.90mb/s. :( My download speed is a solid 12-15 though. :)

Well, I tried downloading AVG to see if their AV program was less "intrusive" as Avast has basically become if you don't buy the full version. Same thing. Said like 4 minutes, then 8 minutes, kept going up.

I still have Mini Tools downloading. It's stuck at 746KB out of 30.5MB, going nowhere.

I did download around 4GB yesterday, but I did it on a proxy server out of either Amsterdam or Toronto (I can't remember which, since those are usually the two I use the most). If I'm getting throttled, it's the first time it's ever happened.

If these issues don't resolve themselves tomorrow, then I'm going to call AT&T U-verse.

Unplug the modem, wait a minute and then plug it back in. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

As far as Avast goes, all you need to do is do a custom install and uncheck the tools section. Thats where most of the crap comes from. I don't get hounded by popups or anything wanting me to buy the full version.

Figured out the Avast thing :)

As far as unplugging the router/gateway, not sure if that did anything or not. But for downloading Mini Tools, I kept trying it and kept getting the same results - even today. But then I thought maybe they were recording IP addresses (CNET for the Mini Tools download). So, I connected to a Munich, Germany, proxy, and sure enough the download was as it should have been. No problems.

It doesn't make much sense. But when I connected to a proxy, it worked.
