ive got this somewhat old machine here, and im trying to install windowsXP on it as an upgrade. i know it would be easier to wipe the hard drive, but im curious as to why the machine cant be upgraded to WinXP from 98se. any reccomendations?

Why couldn't it? The only reason why it couldn't is if the hard drive isn't big enough, or the computer's specifications aren't up to par (which is hard to do).

"windows XP setup does not support upgrading from windows 98 to windows xp home edition. setup cannot continue."

the specs are definitely up to par.

Does it say anything else? You sure it is 98se, and not 98? Do you have the original Windows CD?

no, nothing else, even after the "dynamic update" thing it autoruns.

yep, im looking at the original windows cd. its 98se, alright.

no, and i shouldnt have to, you should be able to start the upgrade from the winxp disc while running 98....or so i think

Try booting from it. That's the best way. You will want to backup any data you have as well, just in case it doesn't cooperate :)

anybody who is still reading this thread.........apparently i dont have enough memory to do a scandisk or defrag. what the hell.

if it's at all an option for you, i'd format the drive, install 98se from scratch, then upgrade to xp. that should work. whatever is preventing you from completing the upgrade as it is now, will be erased with a format.
