Doom 3 looks bad

Hey, I just got Doom 3, and I installed it and started playing it. The game says the graphics should be set to high, at 800*600 resolution, with everything in the advanced menu on but vertical sinc and antianalyzing. I changed the resolution to 1600*1200, and it still plays fine, I just get a lot of sharpies, the backrounds look semi-pixelated, and it just looks alot worse than I had expected, not nearly as good as HL2. I turned on vertical sinc and antianalyzing, same problem. I turned it up to ULTRA with everything turned up to max. Aside from a little lag, it only looks slightly better and still is nowhere near HL2. I'm gonna try High with 1024*768, and vertical sinc and antianalyzing off and see what happens. If anyone knows why this is happening, please tell me. My GPU is a NVIDIA FX 5500 256 mb.

I find it hard to belive that on 1600X1200 on ultra settings with everything on max all you had was a little lag with a fx 5500. Myabe your definition of a "little" is different then mine. I truthfully would find it hard to believe if you was getting more then 20fps.

It honestly should not look bad at those settings. Make sure your using the most recent drivers and that your directX is up to date. beyond that I'm not sure but the game looks fantastic on my screen. Is your monitor a crt or LCD?

I'm not sure, but isn't D3 a somewhat older game than HL2, and HL2 had really really great graphics? Isn't it then natural that D3 has a bit worse graphics?

False :-). does not matter the fact it was out b4 Half Life 2, they where both out the same year and both have very different engines behind them. Doom 3 engine has the same ability to look as life like as HL2 only the textures and enviroment are different.

Doom3 is an OpenGL engine where as HL2 is D3D. Doom3 should look better than HL2 but it can be hard to tell unless you crank the gamma because the game is so dark.

nevermind

I turned the specs onto what is recomended, mainly the 800*600, and It looks alot better. And I did run it on ULTRA 1600*1200, and it ran fairly well on the low polygon parts, but when I got to explosions and other high requirement images, the computer did lag pretty noticably. And I was probably getting like 25 FPS on ULTRA 1600*1200 when it was low polygon images. I noticed the main difference in graphical quality and performance came when I turned the resolution down.

Idiot

i'm an idiot, but how come 800*600 with all the graphics on high looks better than ULTRA 1600*1200. Or is it just me.

Id set the bar at 15tops

Right on the head! :)

No. HL2 is mostly a physics game rather than graphics. FarCry's graphics were arguably better. As for Doom3, no contest :)

LOL cuz if Valve had their way it'd be another couple years before they were done.... ;)

Yes it's just you. Possibly because you didnt define "better" whether it be performance or visual .... when you drop to 8x6 the performance will be better but visually not a chancr
