doom 3 running slow on new pc

I have been having a few problems playing Doom 3 on my new pc. The problem is basically low frame rates on the recommended setting. I have it on High at 800 x 600 resolution which is what it recommends for my system but am getting frame rates of about 10-15FPS.

My system is
AMD64 3200+
1024mb RAM
256mb NVIDIA FX5500 video card
200GB HDD

I really should be able to play the game at at least 30FPS but even on 640 x 480 resolution it only goes at 15-20FPS.

The pc has no viruses. I have tried a few tweaks but none seem to work. I read somewhere that you can uncompress the .pk files. Does anyone know how I might be able to speed up the game without lowering the settings

- The bottleneck is the video card ... have you considered upclocking it?
- At high details, 15-20fps sounds about right for High Detail

how do I upclock the video card and could it cause problems in the future.

thanks

Does anyone know why it is that DOOM 3 demands such a monster system to run it. I can play unreal 2004 on all the highest settings and highest resolution at high frame rates.
Multisource dynamic shadowing and a lot of it. When u run it on Ultra mode, it actually starts using some volumetric stuff which REALLY taxes your system (dynamic is so "passe" :P)

Also, am I likely to have any problems with Half life 2
Based on my experiencs with it you should be fine .. it runs perfectly ok on my setup (ive also heard it running perfectly ok on a GF3Ti500). I wont make any comments on the implications of this...... :P
