Doom 3 runs very poorly. Video Card upgrade help needed!!!

I think i'll upgrade with:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor
Nvidia Geforce 8600GTS
1GB DDR Memory

I hope the differences are noticeable. Hoping to upgrade sometime in Feb 2008. Thanks guys!!!:)

Goody. :) They're are officially named as "server chips", and they work mighty fine in a server build. But in actuality they are 5600+ toledo chips that have been stress-tested, undervolted, and underclocked. They are very stable, and as I said above, imperatively good at overclocking.

Just alittle background on the chip, everyone likes that.

I'm really looking forward to this upgrade:
AMD Opteron 185 Denmark 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor
Nvidia Geforce 8600GTS
1GB DDR Memory
Power supply? someone educate me...

All that would require a 350-400 watt PSU, with 18-20 amperes on the +12v line. You could go higher, but that would only impact on future upgrades, it certainly won't help the system run stabler, or better.

Edit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817174019 Something like this would be perfect, yet if you ever choose to upgrade to more current hungry card it may require a new PSU upgrade. Got this specimen from Ceewi1's recommendations so you know it's good :)

Doom 3 runs fine on a AMD 64 single core remember doom 3 came out before dual core was available and is only dual core with a patch. Your graphics card is no where near good enough. Is your motherboard AGP or PCI express?

very true it runs on high with good frame rates on my system in my sig

If that was a question, AGP=Accelerated graphics port. Utilizing a 66mhz bus it effectively doubled bandwidth of the old PCI slot, and was used solely for graphics related peripherals. AGP also increased output by "strobing" the clock a certain number of times similar to what an oscillator crystal does with CPU multipliers. It is surpassed in performance by PCI-e, but still has a semi large user base and good performance by it's own rights. Given this, it's still old, and should never be solely implemented into a new build.

I'm a like an encyclopedia man... :D
