I am trying (impulse really) to install Windows 3.1 into VirtualBox (VM ware), but I keep getting an error that says "Setup is unable to create the specified directory on the specified drive.". Im using DOS 6.22 to install with, so its not a compatibility issue. Hard drive is setup as a pata unit (HDD master, CD/DVD secondary).
Anyone have a clue whats going on here, or more importantly, why it can not create "C:\windows" directory?

Is drive formatted as FAT,FAT16,FAT32 or NTFS?
Because if it's NTFS,DOS won't be able to do anything on the NTFS drive...

Oh by the way drink a lot of chocolate milk while having torture with these things. You will need it...at least I did :D
Cheers mate!:D

sorry, im lactose intolerant.
I assume that it is FAT plain. When I set up the Vmachine, I choose DOS as the OS. 6.22 will not install though (can run, but will not install).
Anyone know how to check and see which partition style (FAT(32) or NTFS) is being used on this machine setup?

If you used DOS 6.22 to format your virtual disk then the disk was formatted as FAT, FAT16 or FAT32 depending on what size disk you created.

I'm confused by your statement: "6.22 will not install though (can run, but will not install)." Can you explain that? How can it run if it won't install?

Here's a link to instructions on the VMWare site to install DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1: Install DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1

As was stated, DOS will not install, but rather runs in the RAM (guessing there, since I had to remove the DOS disk to put the 3.1 disk in.)
Might I need to run a Gparted disk in teh machine and format FAT before retrying?
