hello. i was just curious. sometimes on my desktop, in the top left hand corner of my screen there is a tiny white dot. it doesn't do anything that i can find, but whenever i hilite the icons on my desktop and click that dot, it's like i'm clicking on a window or something off of the desktop. and when i click back on the desktop again, the icons that i hilighted will light up and then go back to normal, as if that dot wasn't a part of the desktop. what is this thing?

Hmm... sounds like some weird type of spyware or something. Like some type of virus that isn't that damaging, it's just there to mess with you. It would probably be pretty easy to disable, through MSConfig or something, but it would require some trial and error. Try running some virus scans and spyware removal programs. Is it there as soon as you restart?

At first the description sounded like a bad pixel on the monitor itself. The activity seen when highlighting your desktop icons could suggest another problem besides some type of malware. Have you tried changing display settings or installing any Vista themes lately?

i ran virus scan and spysubtract but i found nothing. it's not like it's a problem with the monitor settings, it's only in that corner. it's like just something that's there in the corner, but when i click on it, it does the same thing as if i'm clicking on some random part of that "start" bar at the bottom of the screen. it doesn't DO anything, it's just there.

Do you have a background set for display or just using the color selection or defaults for the desktop? I wasn't referring to the screen resolution earlier but the appearance and desktop settings.

well, i rebooted my computer and the dot is gone. if it comes back within another reboot i guess i'll update this.

You may simply seen a glitch with a display driver now seemingly gone. Or you may have had something leftover from a previous session that simply wasn't seen on screen while the driver was still being loaded. Take a look at the processes in the task manager and the msconfig startup group to see if something there is... out of place?

well i restarted my computer up again and the dot is there. it's not a pixel problem because the computer seems to be recognizing that i'm clicking on a different part of the desktop.

Have you made any recent cnahges as far as video software or anything related to the display? It does seem to suggest something being loaded that may be leftover from a previous software. One thing you may want to run is a free system registry cleaner like RegCleaner. http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

Another besides a loose entry there could relate to something mentioned earlier about spyware. But instead of that some type of adware popup not being displayed fully or another startup that would bring something up onscreen are things to consider. One thought was to try right clicking on the spot itself to see if you see any properties screen come up.
