my laptop came with win 10 but i prefer a win 7/Linux dual boot. can I load these instead? I tried a Linux studio but it refused.

I have no idea what a "Linux Studio" is but there is nothing stopping you from installing Windows 7 providing you have a valid product number for Windows 7. Also there is nothing stopping you using a valid Windows 7 install in a dual boot configuration with a Linux distro. In fact most (if not all) Linux distros will ask you if you want to set up a dual boot. Don't forget that your Windows 10 installation will have a UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) type BIOS and you will, probably, have to disable "secure boot" in the bios to install Windows 7.

Linux Ubuntu has a lot of spin off distros, Studio OS one of those. I was not able to load but was not aware that secure boot was the reason. I tired to downgrade Vista once and go back to XP but got an error message. win 10 doesn't work with a lot of my hardware.
What exactly did it say when it 'refused'? Most of the time for new formats as per above you'd have to disable secure boot in order to install W7/Ubuntu.
