Download speed problems.

Well, me and a friend (who both have SBC Yahoo! DSL, and live within a couple miles of eachother) were downloading a 500mb~ game, and when I was chatting with him, he told me he has 150kb/s, and I looked at mine, only 38kb/s. I've never really thought about it very much, and never seen my download speed go over 60kb/s, so I found a speed test site, took the speed test and got 147kb/s on the download speed test... so I'm really confused and was wondering if you had any idea what would be the problem, I'd love to see my download speed at 150kb/s. (Also, although my computer downloads extremely slow, my computer lags to hell when downloading, and can barely run browsers)

Thanks in advance.

Were you both downloading from the same place? If so the same exact mirror?

You also may have spyware which slows it down.

Yea, same exact mirror, same site. Guess I'll run Norton tonight... never really realized I had slow download speeds compared to everyone else until my friends said what theirs were...

I guess is your cable company. Because I had experience like that too. And then I called comcast and they say "They might be fixing something in the area."

"They might be fixing something in the area."
Yeah, I agree. They might have been doing something in the area so that might have cause the temporary drop in your download speed. Check it again after a week or so and see if there is a difference.

The fact that you live a couple of miles apart is the key. Dsl speeds are faster or slower depending how far you are from the central office. He could be simply closer to one than you.

the point of cable is that its done optically and therefore the integrity of the signal is much greater, the optical information is then converted to a electrical signal very close to your home, so if there is any difference its negligible.
i think its something to do with your system, there is a remote possibility that it has something to do with your exchange which is the only major difference between you and your friends connections

He doesn't have cable he has dsl and therefore distance plays a hugh role. I do dsl repairs and installs every day in Indianapolis.

well, have you thought that it could also have something to do with your hdd? im not sure if it would be that big a difference, but it might have something to do with it?

Clearly you were using a web graphics accelerator.
NO way your speed on www.bandwidthplace.com (Which is where you did the test) Would be that high unless you did.

Even at a friends house that has T1 the site only gives them 5.0mpbs

Plus! Their website has glitches in it.... You often can hit back and then it test will be preloaded which gives you a high speed..

Try going to www.pcpitstop.com and run the internet bandwidth test.
