hey fokes, new to the forum, need help and i thought would be good idea to join a computer forum. ok to the point.
a friend asked me to fix the old IBM machine running xp home. told me a problem that they could not create a new internet connection. did a scan of spyware quite a few on there but were all cleaned.
however when I ran a virus scan through AVG Free, well &!@( did I get worried. over 1500 :eek: infections of .log, .exe and .dll files. Heres a list of just the first 3rd of infections.

really has made me wonder what the hell they have been doing and how much there own home hasn't been broken into several time, with the lack of security knowledge shown.

of course i know that a clean re-install of windows will fix this, but I'd like no know if there were any miracles out there.

hope this give some idea of errors. one or two parts of this log look a little off.
 
This machine is completely open to infections, Windows hasn't been patched in years (not even SP1!) and there's no firewall. That needs to be sorted asap. Anyhow..

Run Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan only", place a check by the following entries.

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Delete this file.

Download Atf cleaner.

Install and run the program, make sure all the boxes are checked before running it.

Then run this online scan.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Save the report at the end of the scan.

Then restart the computer, and post a new Hijackthis log, and the report from the online scan.
 
sorry again it has taken so long to get back to this, been it of a busy week.
currently have a service pack 2 cd I can install and will soon connect my broadband up and do the LARGE LARGE windows update which will take ages.
