Downloading and anti virus issue

Hi Folks

Firstly, I am not very good at this type of thing so stick with me. Hopefully I am posting in the correct place!

Noticed last night when I went to open an email attachment that it goes through the whole process as normal but the email never opens. There is no error message, or nothing.

I also noticed that when I went to dload something from a website that again it went through the motions but never started to dload.

Now I installed a new anti virus last week (Avira), and I am assuming that this might be a factor. So I de installed that to see if it would help (Couldn't find an appropriate setting on the config menu), with the plan to reinstall it and see if that helped.

However it won't let me unistall avira as it errors saying

"Setup could not determine the feature control file or was not able to read it correctly
[Errorcode:7]"

Therefore it looks like avira is/ was not working correctly either. Are they connected? I don't know.

Firstly:
How can I deinstall my avira, so that I can reinstall it again. This would be the most important thing.

Secondly:
Any ideas to my original problem as with a half cooked AV at the minute it still has the same error!

I am reading on some forums there that I might need an 'unistaller' programme? Would this be a good idea, and if so any good/ free ones?

Running this program will remove any entries by avira and will allow you to reinstall Avira or install any other virus program.

Go to :
Program files x86 and find the avira directory.
Then delete them all
