My daughter ive just found is using my internet connection to download films and music to her laptop.

how do i find out if this is being done from illegal websites? What questions do I need to ask, I'm not very computer savvy.also. if it turns out that these sites are illegal. could I get prosecuted as its my connection? thanks

If shes paying for the material from a legitimate site its ok. You could perhaps ask her if she knows anywhere you could download some movies, then research the sites shes probably used.

Make sure it certainly stops there if its not ligimate. I mean like, its very unlikely she was downloading films without copyright protection.

If It is illegal you could get prosecuted, but i doubt your ISP will dob you in. The media industry is starting to tackle illegal downloads for copyrighted material so its important it doesn't continue.

yes, she would be honest with me. But, I would just like to arm myself with
some background and information on the subject.

thanks

Ask her if she's knows what torrents are, they're the main method of downloading illegal software, films and music. Then, if she has anything like uTorrent on her computer, you know that she's been downloading them illegally.

Haha I doubt that. Millions of people download illegal movies and music. Its so easy to do so its highly likely she might be.

I think it would be best to just ask her whether or not she is doing it. Some ISP's warn their customers to stop downloading illegal things. But most probably don't.

Either that or you could write down all the programs installed on the computer and we'd be able to tell if any of them are used for illegally downloading pirated material...

She could also be using a program called Limewire to download them. Its fairly common because its easy to use, its also illegal to download movies, music, software (unless already free) in this way.

Also if you notice programs with names such as "Bearshare" "Frostwire" "Bittorrent" and such, those are programs that are used to share files illegally also...
