downloading program

ok, here's the thing
i download music once in a great while...usually over some stupid bet that me and a buddy make when we're drinking, about the way a song is or something (yes, we have no lives)
and i have been using winmx. but i just noticed last night that it wasn't working anymore...then, researched it a bit today and found out that they are charging now
i normally wouldn't have a problem paying for something if i was actually going to use it on a daily basis. but since i only use it maybe once a month, i don't want to have to pay for it. ya know

does anyone know of any good downloading programs that are free. i have heard of alot, but i am affraid of getting a virus or something. so i figured i'd ask for your opinions on what one would be best and safest

one more thing, i am not sure if i shoudl have posted this in this forum, the internet forum or what. but i figured since it was for software, this would be a good place
 
use torrents, they are the best way. and about viruses, dont open any suspious files (e.g .exe, .bat)

i'm only semi-computer savi
hahaha

and i never do open the .exe and .bat and all them. but people can still hide viruses in the mp3's and such right? i know winmx scanned all files with a virus scanner before even allowing it to be shown on the search results
 
So absicly you want to get free musci you would other ise have to pay for...thats not allowed to speak of here.
