hey i have a 1mb connection but whenever i download something from a webpage, torrent or anything really my download speed never exceeds 120kb/s. why is this? shouldnt i be getting almost 1mb/s?

do a speed test, you probably will get 1000 kb/s download and 128kb/s upload, go to speedtest.net perform a test and post the results here

1mbps is about 120 kb per second.
1000 / 8 = 125. so about 5kb per second is for overhead

out of curiosity how much are you paying for that connection?

Dnutz is right, you are paying for a 1 Megabit connection. Divide by eight to get the speed in megabytes. It comes out to 128 or so.

The speed also depends upon how fast the server is able to send data. So in some circumstances it's not your connection's max speed that is reached, it's actually the server's.

It's a scam really. ISPs say you have a 1 megabit connection, but everything is measured in bytes. 1 bit = 8 bytes. So 1,000 megabits = 125 megabytes.
