DPI Setting help please

Hi there guys,

On my windows 8 laptop I noticed some certain programs ( flight simulator 2004 mostly ) was having text overlap and look distorted, I was told maybe I should change the DPI in display settings, I changed it to smaller 100% and its taken care of the overlapping of text but the problem I have is it seems my desktop is way to small and kinda zoomed out too far.

When looking at my clock its just very small, is this how I have to have it I I keep the display setting at 100%?

I thought changing the resolution might make it bigger but the quality seems to change then.

Any help much appreciated, thank you.

You might have to to just change it back when not using it. Personally what I do on my other machine is use a virtual machine running Windows XP 32 Bit just so I can play Sim City 2000 since Sim City 2000 is not compatible with 64 Bit version of Windows 7 or 8.
