Drive C free space reduced after system restore

Hi there. I have been using an HP dv2121 laptop on Windows XP for more than 2 years. Drive C has 62GB and stores everything from program files to my documents and all. Drive D is dedicated to HP_Recovery (11GB).

The first time I ran a system restore (by the manufacturer), everything was reset to factory settings, and all of my self-installed programs and their files and fragments were removed.

However, when I did that again just a few days ago, remnants of my self-installed programs were still in the All Programs list. For example, my Microsoft Office 2007 was there, although no component (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) was working, which I suspect was due to missing parts.

The worst thing is that my Drive C has a lot of space unaccounted for. I run TreeSizeFree, and drive C is currently using about 22GB. which should leave almost 40GB in free space. but all I am having is 16GB, after having run disk clean-up, numerous defrags, and reduced system restore space and deleted off Windows Installer files.

I would very much appreciate any help to see what is the problem here. This is really frustrating as I cannot have any other documents on my laptop except academic work.

Thanks!

What options do you get when you run the HP recovery? do you run it from a CD or is it software installed on the operating system?
