drive not recognized

Hi all,

I plugged a mp3 player/flash drive into my usb port on my laptop and it says found new hardware and it's ready to use however, when I go to my computer it doesn't show up in the list of drives. Any idea how to get it there. I am using windows xp. I had this problem with a flash card reader at work and our IT dept. fixed that, however not sure how they did it. Plaeas help.
 
right click on my computer and hit manage. then go to disk management and see if there are any un initialized drives, and initialize them. then format and you're good.
