Driver issues (Please Help!)

My graphics driver has been resetting after every 5 min of gameplay. I have tried to download a new driver several times now and non work. My computer tells me that the driver has been reset so I think the problem is fixed. Well thats not the case. After another 5 min of gameplay it repeats itself over and over again. I am very irritated with this problem. My video card is a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb. Please help me!

Have you restarted the system after updates are installed? Whenever you change the catalyst version or simply update the drivers alone you have to restart the system to see those made active. The first thing to do after first downloading and saving an update is to use the ATI driver removal tool to remove the previous set of drivers. That will also require a system restart. After those are gone you then proceed with the installation of the new set.

i have restarted the computer several times. are you saying that i need to redownload the catalyst then do as u said?

It has nothing to do with the Catalyst drivers, so you can ignore that. ATi has what's called a "VPU recover". That's what it's doing during gameplay. This is a hardware problem, not a driver problem, more often than not, if you are using Windows XP.

You might want to try a different VGA to see if the card is malfunctioning. You can also disable the VPU recover in the driver control panel and it might pop up with a specific error on the screen to diagnose.

could u plz give me step by step instructions im a little new to this stuff:)

I would aprisiate it alot thx

Well, can you get your hands on another ATi card? That would be best. Just remove your old one and install the new one. Your Catalyst drivers will detect it and then you can see if you can play a game. If you can, your 9800Pro is a hood ornament. If you can't, then you go from there.

To disable VPU recover, go into the Catalyst control panel and look for the heading VPU recover under Graphics Settings. Uncheck the box and click ok.

I am trying to get a different card for christmas. So I might. Are you saying that the best thing for me to do is replace it?

no not to reaplce it just yet as you dont know if its hardware just yet, i mean the 9800pro is a fine card and still stands the test of time but hey if your getting another card for crimbo so be it :P

No, I'm saying the best thing to do is eliminate it as a possibility. Disable the VPU recover and see what happens.

I disabled it and the game froze. My computer was not responding at all. I had to restart it for it to work again.

How long has it been since you updated your Chipset driver driver, could be the AGP driver, plus try droping the card to 4X and see if it still does it.

I found something that will do the trick.
