Drivers, Aaaaaaargh!

Hi all, probably a long shot but I have finally managed to get xp installed on a sony vaio netbook through a bootable flash drive, however I seem to have a problem finding xp drivers, been looking for quite some time now and so far only managed to get a working ethernet driver, don't suppose anyone has found drivers for a Sony Vaio VPCM11M1E netbook, for some reason my exact model number doesn't show up online, but nearly exact

Figure out what your exact model is for everything you need drivers for such as video, sound, and whatever else you need. Just download separately from manufacturers website then searching for one for your whole laptop.

The manufacturers website has this model VPCM11M1E/B which ist he closest to my model I could find and looks like the same netbook http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VPCM11M1E_B/updates I did get the ethernet driver from there even though they all say windows 7, they don't seem to have xp drivers, but surely if the ethernet driver worked there must be a good chancce I can get all the others, but most of them just say my operating system won't support the driver

I'm talking about like each individual part. Figure out your model for your GPU. Google the driver for it and install. Repeat for everything else.

Ah, sorry, I shall try this now, not sure exactly how to find out the manufacturer for each part as the manufacturer field in the device properties says unknown but I shall see if I can find out, thanks for the help

That model came preinstalled with windows 7, they don't have drivers available for XP on their website. Why are you putting XP on this machine?

because it has a 1.6ghz cpu and only 1gb ram, it struggles to do anything, where as my girlfriend's dad's netbook has the same specs but runs xp and seems much quicker, same story with the laptop I had which is now broke

Netbooks weren't made for speed and performance. They are only made for people who do web surfing and email basically. The best thing you can do is see if you can add another gigabyte of memory and call it a day. In fact, I just looked and you'll have to remove the 1gb stick and install a 2gb stick of memory. Then put windows 7 back on there, which I'm sure was windows 7 starter as it uses less memory.

It was Windows 7 starer, it's not like I am trying to use it for new games, I have the desktop if I want to do that, my girlfriend can't even play castlevillle on facebook it's that bad, if I have to I have left the partition with the windows 7 image on so if it all goes horribly wrong I should be able to get that back on quite easily, however I am not prepared to admit defeat just yet, if I can get one working driver I don't see any reason I can't get the others, i'm just a bit confused as to why something that doesn't even reach the.... is it 3gb ram maximum xp recognises? yet they would put windows 7 on anyway, perhaps for the sake of future updates i'm thinking but that's just a stab in the dark, I don''t know

Upon walking out of the room I just realised I made an error in my previous reply in that it is only the 64 bit windows that supports more than 3gb memory but even though I agree with you on the fact that netbooks weren't meant for speed and performance, I just feel that putting windows 7 on is unnecessarily slowing it down, I do have a feeling though that I might still have to eat my words and revert back to windows 7, I will give it 1-2 days max, especially as the person who mainly uses the laptop will destroy me if I don't get it back on soon, it's a shame because I think the netbook only has one slot for memory which you pointed out not in so many words and the laptop upstairs which I use for spares has 1gb of memory just sat there which is a bit of a pain, just edited this part rather than making a separate post as I was on the way past a computer shop and asked the guy there about it, he seems confident he can put the drivers on for 25 pounds, obviously this has made me more determined to find them
