Dropped External Harddrive

I'm posting this for my cousin...anyway, he dropped it about 8 inches onto a carpet floor, now when he turns it on he hears a loud siren noise, and clicking. Just wondering if there's anything that would cause this that wouldn't be the head of the harddrive actually tearing up the disk..he said he brought it to some experts, but they can't run diagnostic tests without risking serious damage to the drive...he's thinking about spending the money on data recovery, as he did have a lot of important work files, etc, on it.

Thanks for the help.

The siren could be the HD motor but the clicking is more than likely the click of death. I'm suprised dropping it once broke it (unless it was powered on at the time), drives can take quite a bit of shock when they are off.

You could try pulling the data off yourself the normal way, but if you don't want to risk anything go with the recovery option.
