Dual Boot - Xp and 7 - How?

I need XP on my computer for several reasons, but like to use the newer 7 OS for others. I have noticed that several members have dual boot capabilities, and I like to get that choice too. I had at one time two partitions on my HD, one had XP, the other 7, but I could not get it to work so that I could choose which one to use at startup. It always booted up with the last OS I had loaded in, in this case it was XP. So I eliminated the partition containing 7 and run now only XP in one, big partition, because that is the most important OS to me.
Any one can tell me how to get dual boot capabilities?:)
