I know that there are thread that contain this information, but I still get some what confused with the process. Here the situation:
I receive got hold of Ubuntu Linux and wish to install this into my computer, however i want to have windows on the computer, for some programs. I heard of dual booting the system with both windows and linux installed, but don't understand how it is done. I found out that you have to have linux installed first and then you do the partition and install windows. And in other sites I found out that you can do it either way. Since i new to linux, i want to know how this procedure is that can be done.

Windows is preinstalled
hard drive is 100gb
ram 256
cpu 1.10ghz

I have Ubuntu and Windows XP Pro installed on my system so I'm sure I can help you.

I don't think it matters which, Microsoft or Linux, is installed first, however for your information Windows was installed on mine first. All I did was change the BIOS settings to boot from CD and then followed the installation procedures. Be sure to create a new partition though otherwise you will install over Windows and you wouldn't want that, would you :)

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, if you are wondering how you select which OS to boot, Linux will edit the Master Boot Record to run a program which allows you to choose which OS.

If you want to put them on the same drive (although I agree with OSDragon) you will have to either re-install Windows after reformatting and creating two new partitions, or, I think there is a program which can cut an existing partition and keep information on but create a new partition. I'll look into that for you because I think I know where to find it.

EDIT:
Here is a shareware version for $40, the demo won't allow resizing.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=resize+partition

That brought up quite a few, teh only free version was a .rpm and was only able to run with Linux.

partition magic

They're all listed in the Google Search. He has quite a list to choose from if he wants to spend 40+ dollars.

Personally I agree with OSDragon, I have one 200GB HDD and a secondary 40GB Hard Drive which Zenwalk Linux is installed on.

But if you must have them on one hard drive you will either re-format windows or like they said download some partition tool.
To be honest a secondary hard drive is better if you are not that good in computing.

make shure to have windows installed first... since it edits the master boot record and kills lilo or grub (wich give you the choice to boot either windows or linux).

You can try and repair it with a livecd/dvd/floppy. But thats not nessesary

I'm going to install linux on my system this weekend. What I want to know is should i parition the hard drive first and then install linux. Or does Linux have the ability to parition an-already-installed windows.

Thanks for you fast posts.

You should definately partition first and then install, otherwise things can get very messy (very quickly) in the installation procedure.
