dual channel memory

and then noticed having bought it that my mobo supports dual channel memory, so should i exchange it for the dual channel version (2 512mb sticks), which is pretty much the same price?

yea, it depends. personally, i would just get an extra 1gb and have 2gb since games are using more and more memory. but, if you dont agree, 512mb in dual channel would definitely be way faster.
