Dual Channel Memory

hey,

Was just wondering what actually is dual channel memory? (and yes before im flamed i have read RAM 101) Just running two sticks of memory isnt dual channel memory is it? also is their any noticable performance advantage?

ohh, ok than, thanx for that, is this used widely by most people, or is this a type of ram only used by the enthusiast who wants the top performance from his/her system? :rolleyes:
 
all dual channel does, is basically puts into sync two sticks of ram. so for example if you have 2x 512mb sticks in dual channel mode, they will act as one stick of ram, and instead of 64bits of data being processed per a cycle, 128bits is processed per a cycle. It creates a second parallel channel to the paired ram making ram useage more efficient, and can alleviate some bottle neck issues.
 
yes, typically basic useage of a computer will not have a performance increase (text editing, internet surfing, basic office apps) but things that are a bit more taxing will.
 
there's dual channel usb flash drives now

And they simply have the ability to write/read from 2 points on the memory at once, increasing their speeds.
