dual channel possible with 3gb of ram?

hi i was wondering, if i am getting 2gb dual channel ram with my up and coming build will i be able to add like a 1gb stick later on downthe road without screwing up my performance? would i have to do something like find the same ram in 512's and run them also in dual channel? im not really sure how that works
 
As long as the RAM in channel A matches the RAM in channel B it should be ok.

Some chipsets can run dual channel asymetrically, meaning if you add another 1GB stick the 2GB would be dual channel but the 3rd would not. If you have a newer Intel chpset (945 or later I believe) it can run asymetrically.
 
well this will be running either a 790FX or a p35, would either of those work? because my brother is getting the amd 790fx on a gigabyte board, would it work on that?
 
ok so the a and b slots will work independantly on the790fx, or at least thats what i got from that last post lol...

one more question, will all four sticks have to have the same voltage or is that also independant?
 
Speed, voltage and timings are set the same for all RAM you have installed so it's best to get RAM that runs at the same voltage.

As far as I know AMD 939-AM2+ you have to have matched pairs to run Dual Channel
 
so... hmm... i guess i could simply buy another of the same 2gb sets that i bought originally, that would give me dual channel, but it would only recognize 3.25 gigs of it...

If you have a 32 Bit version of Windows, then yes.
 
Well, It'll see 4GB, but you'll have to take away video RAM...

For example;

I have 4GB of RAM on a 32bit OS, I have a 512MB graphics card, so my computer only sees 3.5GB of RAM :)
