Dual Channel Question

Hey I have an older ASUS P4SD-LA Mobo, I am currently running a 256 stick and a 512 stick of PC2700, I am looking to get more ram, I had a few questions though, should I just get a 1 gig stick and keep everything running in one channel? or can I get a matching 256 and a matching 512 and run it all in dual channel, or save the money and get a 512 stick and dump the 256. I am just trying to get the most bang for the buck. I am kinda confused on how dual channel works, can I run to matching sets of different sizes 2x 256 and 2x 512 in dual channel?

you can run different sizes as long as they are paired in the correct slots...but dual channel aint all that. Id be more tempted to go with more RAM, rather than less RAM dual channelled
Especially in your position

So I guess it comes down to 1.7gigs single or 1.5gigs dual,. is it a total toss up, and personal preference or is there a clear difference?

I'd go with 2 sticks of 512, gives you a GB, and I'm sure you'll be happy with the performance.

Right, don't just assume that the slots right next to each other match up. While some mobo ram slots are 1122, others are 1212
