dual channel question

So just about 10 seconds ago I upgraded from 1gb (4x256mb) to 2.5gb (2x1gb + 2x256mb) of ram.

my mobo is dual channel, so 2 of the 4 ram ports are blue, and 2 are black. i figured that each color represents a channel, so i had 1.25gb in each color, then booted up. my bios told me that there was an uneven amount of memory in each channel, and that performance would be better if i evened it out. (it did boot up fine after that, and register that i had 2.5gb total).

so i switched it to have each 1gb stick in the blue ports, and 2 256mb sticks in the black ports. upon booting it back up, i didn't get that same message.

So is one black port and one blue port a channel, or is my computer confused?

It depends on how the slots are layed out. On most motherboards the slots for dual channel are 1/3 and 2/4. Only a few are 1/2 and 2/4.

right thats what would make sense to me. 1 and 3 are black, 2 and 4 are blue. thats how i had it originally, and i got the message. is it possible that my BIOS got it..wrong?

yeah, if that is how it is set up, put the two 1 gig sticks in one channel (black), and the two 256 in the other (blue)
