I have heard from many people that Dual core is mainly for multi tasking and single core is best for gaming. But I have yet to see a single core go above 4000+ and dual goes easily up to 5200+. Whats best for gaming?

thx

Well, the best for multi-tasking and gaming are the Core 2 Duos. They are currently the fastest processors available for the public.

so i hear but they are 9638934893489 dollars. So whats really the most reasonable buy? and what will run single programs better?

AMD x2 or intel x2...

You can buy a Core 2 Duo E6300 for $181 on Newegg.

They are by far the best processors out right now, especially for gaming.

First person to give me straight answer all day. thx :)

So you only run 1 program at once?
Only word, then close that, then switch to internet, then close that, and switch to listening to music? Granted, the difference won't be that huge btwn a single and dual core if thats all your doing, but more and more apps are being utilized for dual core these days. And C2D is the way to go.

I dont consider playing a game and Alt-tabbing to a site multi tasking. It just has always been my way of looking at things that single core is better for what i do. But it seems dual/duo is what is becoming the norm. So i will really consider it.

Even if you only have one app open, remember that there are around 20-40 Windows services that are running, which get split up between two processors, instead of just one.

Games are starting to utilize dual cores more and more, so even if you don't multitask, dual cores are still going to be necessary in the future for gaming.

The naming scheme AMDs have used is quite misleading. For instance, an X2 3800+ is basically two 3200+s together, it isn't actually "faster" per say.

see and thats what bothers me, so i dont know what to choose. A AMDx2 4500+ or go with intel and all their different stuff. uber confused sometimes :)

Are you building from scratch? If you already have AMD, stick with AMD, but if you are building and don't have a really really tight budget, Intel Core 2 Duo is the way to go.

well i made everything else. just not sure what to use for proccesser. $250 and down i guess or around that area.

well you can get a e6300 for 180$ get a ds3 mobo for like 140$ and overclock it "NO PROBLEM" to 2.8ghz and it will destroy any stock speed athlon chip

you will not regret it

I will look into it, i will never overclock so thats not really an option. but a few people have recommeded e6300 so i will prolly get that.

core 2 duo is really the best choice. i got mine e6400 from newegg and even clocked at 2.13 its way faster than my intel p4 3.0ghz. and even if u dont think your multitasking, you are. like someone said before background programs are always running. with a dual core they wont slow u down, it takes time to run even one program. so get the core 2, its GRAND!

Thats seems to be what everyone is saying i will defly get it. its hard cause i have always been an AMD man :)

thx for help everyone btw.
