dual core vs core 2 duo

I'm guessing Core 2 Duo is better, since the price for them is higher? I'm looking for a CPU that'll keep up with the 8800gts card I'll be purchasing for the new computer i'm assembling. I was wondering which "type" of CPU is the best w/o breaking the $150 barrier ><. I have $600-700 to spend on this computer and the video card alone is $300 so I'm looking for something to pair with it but not go over the top. I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me out with this problem. Thanks.

i think he means Pentium Dual core. Yes, Core 2 Duo is better, but a Pentium Dual-Core (NOT PENTIUM D), such as a e2180 would be fine, since games mostely rely on the graphics card, and the e2*** are AMAZING overclockers, just ask Oscaryu1. If you can, get a e2180 or e2200.

anyways, Either of those 'allendale' processors should suit your needs ;) even the 'Conroe' series would be more than enough for a 8800GTS :)
if it was me, id go for either the E4500 or the E4600.

core 2 duo processors are based on core technology and have newer instruction sets built in that the older dual core pentiums.
