Dual hardrive question

On my computer I have Windows 2000. The primary drive is a Hitachi 160 gig IDE type drive. I want to install a second hardrive that was formerly the primary drive in an XP based system (also IDE).

I've tried most every combination of jumpers possible trying to get the second drive to be recognized in Windows Explorer so I can retrieve a few files on the second drive.

I've tried the standard primary and slave jumper combinations, as well as jumpering both of them to cable select and insuring the Hitachi is at the end of the IDE cable.

Nothing I do so far has allowed me to access the second drive to get at those needed files.

Anyone got any ideas...thanks.

I see the drive listed as a Secondary or Slave drive on the first page shown during boot up. I can't remember if it said Secondary or Slave.

I know the drive works. I just had it in the XP system yesterday and it booted up and ran great. Unfortunately, putting it back into that system now is not an option anymore.

im not sure if win 2k has this but try going control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management. windows may not have given the xp disk a drive letter, if thats the case, right click on the xp disk and go change drive letter and paths and make it to whatever you want.

Is the master drive suppose to be on the first IDE attachment or the second?
With Sata you dont have to worry about setting jumpers or were a drive is on a cable.
