Guys,
So tomorrow I start my first ever computer build. Ive come along way and i don't want to **** this up. I bought the screws, thermal compound and the anti-static mat and wrist strap. My question is I have two hard drives for this rig, a velociraptor and a WD caviar black 500gig. How do i make it so that my velociraptor is my OS drive and my caviar drive is my personal drive? I don't wanna run raid but two different drives I can access for different things. I also want to make sure vista recognizes them? Any drivers i need to dl to mak this work?

-thanks, 5.0

Guys,
Please?!?!?!? I really need help, I build cars not computers. I need some help on this one, cause I dont want to resort to FRY's building it for 120 dollars.

Run it in IDE or something not Raid 0 working separately right? Vista can partition drives anyway. The drivers that came with your HDD are the ones you should use or just download them off the manufacturers website.

Go into the BIOS to configure it to RAID 1,0 or w/e i cant remember which one it is now ill have a look

Ok RAID 0 is two HDD's working together as one whereas RAID 1 is tw HDD working seprarately. You can set the hard drives to this via the BIOS. but you also have to see which SATA ports on your mobo support RAID (check ur mobo manual)
Hope this helps and merry PC building!

thanks man

another question, how do i properly ground myslef? My whole house is carpeted minus the bathroom and the kitchen, which is tile, and my mom would killl me if im trying to do this whens shes trying to get christmas dinner ready? I bought the strap and the anti-satic mat. i placed my comp on the matt, have me hooked up to the case. im standing on my cardboard boex my case came in. Im gonna touch the case for like 15 seconds before i start working. is that good enough?

Don't use raid 1 as it will mirror the first HD onto the second one, in essence what data is on the first is replicated on the second. In fact don't use raid at all, use the small HD for the OS and programs and the second for "Data". Just plug both into your Sata ports and set up in the BIOS initially

Yeah or you could buy a anti-static wrist strap which clips onto your case. But yeah unplug everythign turn them all of hold onto the case for a bit or a radiator and dont wesr anything like a fuzzy jumper. Standing on cardboard won't do anything you dont really need to go too far but just be careful. But iw ould advise you to get a anti static wrist strap for building especially if your going to be builidng a lot in the future. Maybe build it on the dining room table?

Meh i was close enough :P

could i build it on my desk, thats made outta wood

Yea this is a good idea. Although I built my entire computer on a carpeted floor and no static charge ever ruined anything. Just be sure to ground yourself every once in a while. Not saying it can't happen, but it's rare.

I build mine on the floor and my bed. Nice big area to lay everything out:)

Just make it easy on yourself and don't even connect the WD caviar black 500gig. Just connect the Raptor and get everything up and running. In a couple days just throw the power cable and the SATA cable on the WD caviar and plug it into the next empty SATA port on your motherboard. When you open "my computer" it will show as two seperate drives. That is what you want right?

That's the way I have mine setup...I keep all pictures, music and installer files on the extra drive. I don't run RAID, just a single work drive and a storage drive.
