oh now i see, well its always tricky to choose when a new format is coming out, but to be honest dual layer burners are pretty cheap and the promise of blueray or HD-Disks should not sway you from buying one

I agree with apj, chances are after a bloody battle only one of Blu-ray or HD-DVD will remain. At the prices are astronomical at the moment and will take a while to fall in my opinion. Go for the dual layer dvd.

I agree with previous posts. In any event, double-layer capacity should be plenty for most people's requirements. Also. it's all very well having many times that capacity on a single disc with Blue-Ray or HD-DVD, but we don't know yet how reliable the media is going to be (compared to DVD-R9), and that's an awful lot of data to lose on one disc if it becomes corrupted.

Far too soon to adopt either of them. Go with a proven format till things pan out. Heck, some people still haven't upgraded from their cd-burner yet!
