Dual Monitor... not working

Hey, I have a graphic card in my Compaq Desktop. Its a GeForce 8400 GS. I know the card words, thats what im running my main monitor off of. I'm trying to run a dual using the on-board video card(VGA) as my second one. Can I use a graphic card for 1, and on-board chip for 2? Its not reading. Under Display settings, Its just showing my GeForce monitor.

Do I have to use the different ports on my graphic card to use dual? Like It shows a VGA, DVI and S-video all on my graphic card. Does it have to be on the same card to read dual?

PS-I know my on-board VGA works because I went under the BIOS and changed it to it to double check it worked. It does. And both monitors work too!

Thanks in advanced guys

You cannot (at least afaik) use both onboard graphics and a graphics card at the same time.

So i'll need to get a DVI/S-Video adapter? Or a VGA splitter?

I was wrong. You can with certain cards. Give me a few minutes and I will see what I can find for you.

EDIT- I can't seem to find anything about it. Someone else have an idea?

You can definitely run on board graphics and another GPU at the same time. I believe what you will need to do would be to go into your BIOS and enable your onboard which is probably being disabled when your motherboard detects an installed GPU.

I went under my BIOS, under Video Adapter, its selected as PCI. There is an option for on-board card, but when I do that, it won't read my PCI graphic card at all, but my on-board worked. How would I enable my onboard WITH my graphic card?

When you enable onboard, it will boot with only the onboard video, but you should be able to go into your display settings and enable the second monitor connected to the GPU.

I went into the BIOS, changed to Onboard, and now (using second monitor thats plugged into the onboard) but I can't see a second monitor under display. it just shows 1. How do I turn on the GPU monitor?

They are both plugged in and work.

PS-work as in they turn on/show image, but i can't get them to work dual screen. Thanks

depends on the motherboard, with my nforce 7 series and various amd based chipsets you can afaik run both the discrete card and the onboard video in tandem for either improved performance, more displays, or more efficiency, with the nvidia card you have you would need a nforce 750 or 780 chipset i believe, i just never really cared for the hybrid power functions, when the driver was older it would completely turn off my discrete cards, fans included, and make the case whisper quiet, it was...well, nice, fans are annoying

-in short, you can, but you need a chipset/card that supports it and need to be running windows seven
