i cant find my other thread, anyway, i have windows 7, want to run XP as dual operating system.

i've partitioned the hard drive, i got a actual XP disc. put the disc in, powered up, disc starts reading normal, and it says "setup is loading windows" (something along those lines) and it doesnt do anything. i left the computer for 2 hours and it didnt do anything. i really have no idea what to do!

followed it to T. when the blue screen pops up, at the bottom in the grey it says all the stuff its doing checking the drives, cd rom, video card etc, then it says setup is starting windows. at the bottom in the grey it simply says "setup is running windows" or something, and nothing happens.

Duel operating system

To run a duel OS with Windows 7. you must install Windows xp first. And after you got it all setup with the updates and everything. Then install the windows 7 CD and setup the updates and all that.

If Windows 7 is installed first, xp will not install. Xp has to be loaded first.

well according to the windows website you can. my friend has done it, he is in tech school and has done it a bunch of times and he's not sure. and my computer came with windows on it so theres not much i can do about that.

Is there any valid reason you need to run XP and if so why? If you do, a virtual machine is much easier to run inside of Windows 7. Unless you want legacy support for an older application you are better off running Windows 7.

believe me, i wish i could just run windows 7. i love it, very easy to use, fast, doesnt have the problems XP did. unfortunately i have programs that windows 7 will not run. i have a program from 1998 and windows 7 will not run it. maybe theres a way to do it, and if there is then that'd be great.

As I understand it you must have Win 7 Professional minimum to run Win XP mode in virtual.
I have home premium , tried virtual but not allowed.

after doing a little research on XP mode, i'm going to give that a shot. i wanted to do dual operating systems because it will keep everything seperate.

Download virtual box, which is free open source virtual machine software and install XP within Windows 7 to run those programs. Also, you should really upgrade your programs, things from the 90s are over a decade old now.

thats not an option, the updated programs are not the same thing as the older ones.

im downloading virtual box now, lets hope this works i really need to get these programs up and running again.

alright i cannot use virtual box, i dont have windows pro or whatever it is. i have home premium.

im really lost on virtual box thing. i tried running it and it says "fatal error (something something) halted" so i have no idea.

ok, im working on virtual box, i didnt know i had to install XP on it, thats what threw me off. i appreciate everyones input and pointing me in the right direction.

Yeah virtual machines act just like real OS installs except they are kept on a virtual disk. You can run the OS with in the OS and even drag and drop files between. It will be easier and run faster than dual boot because boot times of a VM are only a few seconds.
