Dual or Quad

Hi,
Can someone tell me whether I am better with a dual core or a quad core, I get that the quad is ..... more!! in as much as 2 usually more than 4. I am actually more interested in the graphics card. I don't want to spend £1600 on a computer but I am replacing this one after 3 years because it doesn't support PCI-E and I am struggling to find a decent graphics card on which my son can play recent games. I have now decided that I would be as well replacing the tower unit since a new motherboard etc would cost almost as much by the time it is fitted.
So is quad better than dual and which is the best graphics card arround without getting into silly money.

Thanks to anyone who can help

just get a triplecore phenom x3 and a cheap 4850 you will be good ! thats if your going to run an AMD Machine.
Personally, I wouldn't get a triple-core for a new systems, those were designed to be more of a lower-budget upgrade solution for those who already have AMD processors. However, for a new build altogether I would recommend a Quad, something like the Phenom X4 9950.

But there are simply too many unknowns to tell what's the best for you. What do you do with your computer & what apps/games do you run, what kinda budget do you have, do you have any brand preferences (i.e. are you an AMD or Intel fanboy?) or do you just want the best bang for buck? Do you need a whole computer system or just the tower? If you just specify a budget, some of the pros around here can fix a build for you.
