Dual, Quad, Pentuim or AMD? - This is different

Yes, I know this is a bit bias, but I don't really know what the AMD market is like. I am also no sure if this has been done or not but I couldn't ind it, so here it goes. I am more of an Intel person, so Dual's, Quad's and Pentium is still used. A definitive answer would be Dual, they are cheaper than Quads, and who really NEEDS a Quad anyway?

I meant to put a poll in but i forgot, oh well, you will survive right?
Brand Poll, this is different, it's the actual CPU's. Also please put the AMD CPU you like, if it's your choice.

what do you do with your computer? i mean, what type of car do you want to buy right.. well are you just going to drive to and from work all day or do you need to win a race with it?

i do some video conversion and lots of multi-tasking so quad core is good for me. most people would go with a cheap core 2 duo.. and by the way, Pentium is just core 2 technology with a smaller cache, and celeron has an even smaller cache. expect linear performance drops.

the core 2 duo e8400 is extremely popular, its VERY overclockable... most people get a 33% overclock to 4ghz... with the right motherboard and cooling.

i got a 25% overclock with my Q6600, but i didn't overvolt at all. if my motherboard wasn't crap i could probably hit 3.4ghz pretty easily.

If I was a gamer id go duo. But I do a lot of audio/video/image work, so I went quad. Which still can play Crysis, GRID, CoD4, and all the other games I play with no lag, and only a few fps behind the duo chips.
 
That's cool. Can you please put down which CPU line. I didn't make this poll for myself, incase anyone wanted to put down what I should get. I personally have the E7200 because that's what was there for me.
 
who really NEEDS a Quad anyway?

no one in here needs a quad or a dual or a computer for that matter-the word is "WANT"

but i "WANT" and "NEED" a quad purely because i can run numerous intensive programs together and i would like a little bit extra headroom!

i also game and my quad rules :)

Core2Duo is a good chip all around. The best in the market atm. The quad isnt needed by most people (in fact generally you are better off with a really high end dual core then a low end quad, and they are about the same price). If you are a gamer or do lots of number crunching, rendering, or video editing, the quad is a good idea, though.

The new (old ones were totsally different thing) Pentium Dual Core CPUs are Core2s with half the cache, they are to the core2 , what the celeron was to the pentium in the old days. Its the same sort of price as the AMD X2. The AMD X2 is still not a bad chip, but in comparison to the core2, it is not as good, however it is much cheaper, so for people who wouldnt use all the power/people on a budget, the X2 packs a lot of punch for the price.

Speaking of AMD, the new AMD quads arent as good as as intel core quad and are only marginally cheaper. Not worth the money.

Cores also have more overclocking potential.
