Dumped the wrong thing!!! not again!!

I downloaded Firefox and decided to dump it,after doing so I ran search to find any junk left behind and sent it to recycle bin.Unfortunatly I deleted it before I realized there was a problem.
Now I get:
"Unable to locate the program associated with it for performing this action.create an association in the folder options control panel".

This happens why I try to use desktop shortcuts.
System restore will not work to correct this.
Any help appreciated.
 
You can easily download and reinstall it to complete all of the files. From there you would use the Control Panel to remove it with the add/remove method followed by the use of a registry cleaner to remove leftovers there. For a fresh copy of FireFox, http://www.firefoxtoolbox.com/

For an excellent and "free" system registry cleaner, RegCleaner and RegClean are two to have onhand. RegCleaner can be downloaded at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

You cal also search download.com for some file recovery software. There are a lot of free ones that work pretty well.
 
Downlload.com, freewares.com, tucows.com, softpedia.com, and several others offer freewares as well as shareware tryouts. Majorgeeks.com has a list of catagories to choose from for the long list in each of both types.

K Ive done this and my desktop icons work with fire fox installed however when I add/remove Fire fox I get error again when trying to use my desktop icons.Also after running the cleaner.?

When using the cleaner which one are you referring to? RegCleaner or RegClean? I used RegCleaner extensively on 98 and XP alike without seeing problems with it. That will also give you a window to manually check off the registry values of things you want to remove. Have you rebooted since FireFox was removed? It sounds like something cross linked when you installed it the first time. What steps did you use when trying to remove it?

How to use scannow sfc...

The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.
Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.
To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow
