During gameplay computer performance decreases

Recently I switched the hard drive I'm currently using from my alternate computer into the computer I'm using right now. Ever since then when I play computer games it starts out normal for about an hour, but after an hour I start noticing small patches of lag in the gameplay. This lag comes and goes lasting only for a few seconds at first and getting worse each time it does it. after about 2 1/2 hours of gameplay it gets to be unbearably laggy and I either restart my computer or put up with it until my computer actually freezes.

Whats the deal? It didnt do that before on either computer. I even bought a new video card and more ram. My video card is a 256 mb GeForce 6800 and i have 1024 Ram.... I dont understand..
 
Really? Well I've run the game off of my secondary drive as well and it does the same thing.

Do you think it could be my processor over heating? Or I was thinking of having to reformat to see if that affects it.. Thats just a pain in the butt though.
 
He meant the cpu overheating, not the hard drive. If you have an intel processor, that's most likely the problem. AMD may or may not be, AMD's don't thermal throttle like intels do.
 
Yes, the processor, or could even be the GPU... Either way, heat will slow anything down, throttling or not.. As suprasteve mentioned, Intels actually drop their speed when they overheat, but I'm thinking AMDs also have something similar to that.
 
Yeah I dusted the whole thing out. So I guess theres no possibility of a software malfunction? I just need to find a way to keep my computer cooler.

Whats odd is that I've had this CPU in the same spot for a few months and it hadnt done this before. I'll see if anything changes if I move it to another area with better ventilation.
 
what type of processor is it? And next time you restart after a lot of gaming, check your bios temp on the processor and see if they seem high. Have you checked your available memory after gaming? Maybe something eats it up and that's all the problem is. But software would typically screw up right away and not wait awhile to get weird. My computer ran hot for a couple months before it finally broke my mobo, so heat can be something that takes awhile to do its damage.

No they dont throttle per se but they will still have heat problems (and when they do, they shut off rather than throttle)
