Dust Problem!

How do you guys keep dust from accumulating in your desktop! Yesterday I moved some thing around and notice my desktop had this furry Grey spot on the side panel fan. It was all dust! Does dust do any damage to the computer?
 
Well... i havent tried it yet, but ive heard using ladies pantyhose cut to fit infront of the fan works well as a dust filter.

This actually does work, so does cutting a swiffer cloth to fit the front intake. The negative is that cosmetically its not the prettiest thing :/

Yes dust can damage your computer. If you let it build up for too long you'll start to see overheating issues causing random shutdown's and shortening the life-span of your components. You should probably check for dust build up at the very least once a month. I've got a clear side panel on my case so I do every time I get on. I would recommend buying some compressed air and blowing out your system about every 2-3 weeks.
 
i used some polyurethane foam i found in my parts box. some electronic eqipment comes with this stuff, it's pretty good, just clean it often if you have a lot of air flow; i use it on the front fans of the antec 900.

lol i don't tend to have a problem with dust as im continuously opening my case and every time i do i clean it. but i have seen many computer die due to heat/dust issues
 
Excessive dust can be damaging to your computer but its not a guarantee. I've seen some extremely dirty computers in a warehouse that were still working fine. I would definately play it safe though and open the computer up once a month or so and use compressed air from a vacuum cleaner or a can of compressed air. I use a shop vac with the hose on the positive air pressure side. Turn off the computer first so you don't make the computer fans spin at extreme speeds.

Think of your computer as a densely laid out highway system and when dust is introduced those tight distances between 2 roads then becomes no distance at all causing confusion about which way the electricity should go. LOL I guess thats about right.

Same here. I blow my case out at least once a month, if it needs it or not.

My Brother's computer had so much dust in it that it stopped the PSU fan and fried it. It was nasty...

Good lord, don't use a vacuum. It's much more efficient to BLOW the dust out than it is to try to suck it through a heatsink.

Not to mention the static electricity that vacuums create. And we all know bout static and pc components, right? lol
 
i clean mine every few months with compressed air and electronic safe cleaner solution. make sure when you clean it, you clean the desk that its sitting on as well. remove all the dust within a five foot radius of the computer, that'll slow the accumulation way down.
