Hey Everyone:
Was looking around for a site to ask some questions when I discovered this one. What I am looking for is a program that would allow me to (1) copy my dvd's to the hard drive and (2) create another copy on dvd format that the grandkids can destroy on roadtrips, camping, etc. I got a that 123 COPY DVD GOLD but am having a hard time figuring that thing out. I freely admit I'm no genius and some kind of instructions would have been nice to help figure it out. Does anyone have a good program that they would care to reccomend? By the way the operating system is Windows 7.

That is not legal, so no one here can help you with that. As for making a copy, I am not sure of the legality or how to do so, without putting it on a computer.

Maybe I am confused but I thought that as long as you purchased a legal copy of any dvd/cd you could create a back-up file of that dvd/cd.

For your own personal use yes. You can't turn around and sell or give them to someone else though.

Thanks johnb35. Since these will be used by me in the house (on the hard drive) and by my family on trips I think I will be within the letter of the law!

Under fair use doctrine yes, however, under the DMCA it is illegal to make backup copies of digital media, as DVD's are encrypted, and backup would require breaking encryption. This is one of those catch 22 situations where it is legal under one statute, yet illegal under another.

As long as you only share with your family and they don't get copied from the hard drive you will be fine. they won't come after you with lawsuits and handcuffs :)
