DVD Burner doesn't recognize most DVDs CDs

Basic Problem:
Newly installed (used) DVD+RW drive (NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A) only recognizes about 1/3 of the DVDs and CD/CD ROMs.

Symptoms:
The drive appears in the device manager, ejects and lights up when a DVD is installed. When I put in most DVD's the drive will light up for a second but will not recognize the disk. It is as though the drive cannot recognize that there is any media in it. Certain CDs and DVD it will always load, but most it will never load. The drive isn't broken as it works perfectly in the original computer I pulled it from (so I'm assuming there is some code or program I am missing...?).

What I have done:
I have tried to install the most recent drivers and I have installed the most recent version of power DVD (hoping there was some silly code I am missing). I have checked cables and Boot order and all that.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

man that is strange, so it works on your old computer but not all the time now, do you have a seperate operating system you could try it on?

no, I only have those two towers (both with XP on em). I don't get how it can only play random disks (all region one).

Yeah, it is an older burner but I also have the original computer that it came installed in and when installed in that computer it recognizes disks with no problem.

I thought I read somewhere that DVD drives need decoders or some other type of software to work properly. I figure if I do not have that software properly installed on this computer I may have this problem (since the software on the other computer is properly installed the DVD works when installed in that computer).

Resolved

I returned the DVD+RW to it's original computer and as it turns out it no longe works consistently in that computer. Originally it worked out perfectly but at this point I get the same symptoms in its original computer (where it once worked perfectly). I guess the drive was just too old and crappy for the trip.

Funny thing though: When I replaced my original DVD drive into my main computer I can't even get it to eject. The commuter recognizes it but it will not eject through the computer or when the button is pressed. I guess I have the touch of death.

Looks like I won't be trying to "upgrade" anything else in my computer for fear of busting more things.

Thanks oven master and mbt
