DVD burner fries MB?

thanks for reading...

5 YO Medion computer fairly loaded with perfect hard drive for my purposes...

I had ripped a CD to iTunes & left it running & went to work. Came home & computer was dead in the water. Only thing that would happen is the cpu fan would spin up for a few seconds then dead. I figure this is a PS so I put on another and same thing. Unplug everything, reset the CMOS, battery OK but same symptoms so I am looking for a salvage MB. Copied backup on a spare Vista box.

So this AM I try to get the Jimi Blies CD out of the case (forgetting about the paper clip) I figure power it up on an ancient E-machines and pop out the disc. Lo and behold I seem to have fried the MB on that piece of junk (I was going to give it away...)

Anyone heard this story? Can a bad DVD burner fry a MB?

Could the PS be what has fried? I don't have a PS tester and all I can get is 3V on one of the MB connector pins. I assume that the 12V doesn't come until the MB tells it to so is there a way to jumper the PS and make it think it is on so I can test all the power outputs?

thanks

David

It is always possible that a DVD drive can cause a short and trip the mobo. I would say count your losses and get shot of the drive just to be safe and get a new mobo.

It could ofcourse just be coincidence and both systems were on their way out anyway but better to be safe than sorry
