i bought this dvd burner (i thought it was one) from amazon. a lite on brand. after i bought it i heard they are no good. well i installed it and it is not a dvd burner so i contacted amazon and they are refunding my money. they said i could order another one and have it in 2 days. the lite on i have Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98 - Retail (Black) Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98. the thing is i don't want another lite on and have to take it back again. it will only play audio cd, cdrom, cd r/rw and play only dvd so i know its not a dvd burner. it actually says dvd-ram. i'm not even sure what that is but it said it in the description. should i get another one that says it in the description or what. should i not look for that. i want to get a sata dvd burner. i have xp but will soon get windows 7 so i actually need one that will work with both. do you have any suggestions on any good ones. preferably under 30. i would like lightscribe but i don't have to have it. i just don't know what i'm looking for. this is the first time i have ever bought one. if you need any other information please let me know. thanks i hope you can help me. i really need another one so i can have it for school.

That model is a dvd burner. XP doesn't have dvd burning support like it does for cd's. You would need a burning program to enable the dvd burner part like nero, roxio or something similar. Unless the drive is just bad, it is a burner drive.

If you don't like Liteon then get sony, samsung or LG

ok it came with nero 9 essentials. would that help with dvd burning? also what if if i installed windows 7 would i still need a new drive or keep the old one. it says nero linux 4 trial. does that mean its only a trial version? it also says compatible with windows 7.

Installing nero will let it burn dvd's. As I said, XP doesn't have dvd burning support unless you have a 3rd party burning program installed. If you install the software and it burns then you don't need a new drive.
