DVD/CD Drives not refreshing

Hi all, I am having a problem with my DVD and CD drives not refreshing when I insert a new disc. The only way they will refresh is if I restart my computer. I have a Dell 8250 with an NEC DVD+r/RW and a Lite-On CD+/- R/RW. If I insert a new disc after rebooting, I can access and explore briefly but then it hangs and I get the "this program is not responding" message. Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Did the problem suddenly start?

Was anything coincidental with the problem starting?

Have you checked the current data transfer modes for the drives? Device Manager, IDE Controllers, select channel, Properties, Advanced Settings. Should be UDMA Mode 2 or 4.

While in Device Manager go to the dvd drives and see if anything looks amiss (like "this device is not working properly"!).

It may be worth downloading nero dvd speed and nero info tool. The info tool will tell you all sorts of things about what is installed. First thing is to see if it runs. If it does, check each tab for any warnings.
