DVD/CD won't read, appear

Hello-my dvd/cd drive will not read any discs, nor does it show up on My Computer. The Device Manager shows all is working properly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, but no change. I have also had problems with the drive door opening, but it will eventually come if I push the whole thing inwards-- I'm not sure if this is necessarily connected to the reading problem. I am utterly unversed in computer maintenance, and would greatly appreciate any help from those of you understand all things tech far more than me! Thank you in advance.

sounds like your drive might be bad. As cheap as they are these days you might want to just buy a new one instead of trying to figure out what is wrong with your current one.

i got the same problem excpt my cd rw don't work either, but why would it all of a sudden disappear??? and dvd rom and cd rw in my case... is it because of some update from microsoft screwed it up?

Go into hardware settings and delete the controller, then reboot. It should reinstall the drive upon start up.

before buying something new, I'd just give it a shot and plug it into another IDE cable and play around with it first.
