Dvd Disaster!

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I have recently purchased a load of DVD-R discs in order to back up some data. They are "1-16x speed" (whatever that means) but whenever I try to put data onto these it says there is an error. They are just standard 4.7gb discs. Other disks which are "1-4x speed" seem to work but these ones don't. Is there any reason for this or is there some setting or other I can change so that I can avoid throwing all these disks in the bin?

By the way my computer is a Sony Vaio VGN A215Z which I have had for 18 months.

Many thanks

It shouldnt matter much on your computer, but more so on your dvd-r/rw drive. Look at your dvd/r's instruction, or it may say on the face plate, the type of dvd's its supposed to work for, dvd, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd/rw, etc.

ok then . it doesn't say what write speeds etc - it only says it takes dvd r+ and rw etc - could it be the case that my integrated dvd burner only takes dvds of a certain write speeds and 16 is too much? or could it be that i don't have the latest version of nero (unlikely)?

Much appreciated.

Basically i don't understand what the significance of these write speeds is...

First thing that hit me... What format are the disks? There's DVD+R and DVD-R. The speeds shouldn't mater, it just might be limited by your drive. Also, I have seen a few drives and a few disks that just aren't compatable. That's rare, but it does happen.

the disks are dvd-r. i have burnt onto dvd-r before so unless the problem is the manufacturer?? seriously annoying - error messages are coming up whenever i try and burn using recordnow or nero...

You may want to use the regular Windows Burning thing.

If other's work fine.. it's probably just the burner and the disc being incompatible. Like said above, it happens.

What brand is the dvd-r? Hope it's not something like COMPusa.

oh GOD....tell me about COMPusa. I bought about 200 of there 4.7GB Single layer DVD-R because of the nice clean white fronting on them...and let me tell you I have had more burn errors on those disks.

I would recommend buying something more HQ for a few more bucks and save yourself a ton of time!

just my 2cents;)

It could be that your dvd burner was produced at a time when 16x was not available. Updating the firmware may enable writing at the higher speed (not that I would recommend that). My burner is 16x and I don't go over 6x. I would try suggestions below first.

You were correct that the burner may only be capable of burning at a lower speed. There are a few info tools you may find useful now and in the future Nero DVD Speed and Nero Info (for info of others, you should already have in Nero/StartSmart, check versions).

Nero should be able to figure out the max burning speed. If it is not for some reason, manually set the burn speed to what you know works eg 4x. If it won't burn at that, try a different brand of disk (get 3-packs until you find a good one).

I echo comments about buying decent quality disks.
